Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) 2013 Gala de l'excellence: Professor Diane Riopel and student Dominic de Lanauze honoured
The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec's celebrated Gala de l'excellence took place April 8 during the OIQ's annual symposium, whose theme for 2013 was “Ingénieur… Pour que les idées deviennent réalité” (Engineer: transforming ideas into reality).
Held right in the midst of the symposium, the Gala pays tribute to the profession by highlighting the excellence and talent of engineers and engineering students who have stood out for their achievements during the past year. Once more, Polytechnique, the evening's presenting partner, was proudly represented during the event.
Diane Riopel awarded the title of Fellow by Engineers CanadaOn the
recommendation of the OIQ Executive Committee, Professor Diane Riopel was awarded the title of Fellow by Engineers Canada, a
privilege reserved for those who have made a remarkable contribution to the engineering profession. Ms. Riopel received the
honour for, among other achievements, her support for women in engineering. As a true pioneer in the profession, Ms. Riopel has
worked in the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering at Polytechnique since 1978. In 1998, she became a founding
member and co-holder of the Marianne-Mareschal Chair for the promotion of engineering among women. Christophe Guy, Chief
Executive Officer of Polytechnique, noted in his opening remarks that Ms. Riopel is a true role model for our future female
engineers, and added that her consistent involvement in the engineering profession is remarkable and widely recognized.
Bursary for excellence in graduate studies
The OIQ honours one student each year with a bursary for
excellence in graduate studies. The bursary is awarded to a young man or woman who is a member of the OIQ's student section,
and whose academic results and social and community engagement reflect the values of the profession. Dominic de Lanauze, Jr.
Eng., master's student in biomedical engineering at Polytechnique, earned the $7,500 bursary. In addition to his master's
degree at Polytechnique, Mr. De Lanauze also holds a master's degree in business management from UQÀM. He has twice taken part
in Jeunes Reporters, a project aimed at encouraging young people not to drop out of school, as well as going on a
mission to China and contributing to a major study on relieving the side effects of chemotherapy.
Our heartiest congratulations to the honourees!
