All graduate students at Polytechnique Montréal are required to prepare a study plan. It consists of a list of all the academic activities (workshops, courses, internships, projects and seminars) and research activities you must complete for your program. You are responsible for selecting study plan content based on your educational background, your program requirements, and your own needs. It’s an opportunity for you to choose the courses and academic path that match your interests, and the goals you’d like to reach by the end of your graduate studies.
Additional mandatory courses must be successfully completed before a graduate studies degree can be granted. Students in all graduate programs must attend a three-hour course on health and safety. Other mandatory workshops (whose course codes beginning with “CAP”) are specifically required for research-based Master’s and PhD students. Please refer to your study plan for a list of mandatory courses and the deadlines for completing them:
To prepare your study plan, you should first examine the list of available courses and your program structure (mandatory courses, elective courses, specializations, etc.). Click on a course code to access a description of the course, the number of credits offered, the course’s weekly breakdown (three-digit code), the professor assigned to the course, and the terms during which the course is offered.
Your study/research supervisor can help you select the right courses for you. Click on the following link to access a description of your program: List of graduate programs.
WHAT IS A RESEARCH DIRECTOR AND A SUPERVISOR? Your Supervisor (DESS or Professional Master’s) or Research Director (Research-based master’s or Doctorate/PhD) is the professor who agreed to supervise your studies and mentor you at Polytechnique Montréal. His/her name is mentioned on your admission letter. We encourage you to contact your Supervisor or Research Director before the beginning of the semester to discuss your studies and your respective expectations. You will also be able to begin developing your study plan with him/her. Students enrolled in research master's and doctoral programs are well advised to use the Student-Supervisor Roadmap. This is a tool to clarify collaboration and structure discussions between students and their supervisors, in the interest of transparency and open communication. The roadmap will be available on the Moodle My Master's Research skills assessment and My PhD skills assessment, 48 hours after registration for your first term. |
IMPORTANT! Getting your study plan approved
The study plan must be completed using the appropriate form, which you can fill out with the help of your department's student records officer. The study plan must be approved by your academic supervisor (DESS and professional master's programs) or research supervisor (research master's programs and doctoral programs) and submitted to your departmental student records officer no later than the course selection modification deadline.
